Intel Plans 32-Core Processor by 2009/2010

It might be time to change our way of thinking about processor speed. Now Intel is hinting at processors with 32 cores available by the end of this decade. Sure, the company predicted 20GHz chips by 2010 a few years ago, but now instead of higher gigahertz numbers, they're talking multiple cores that will result in a processor that will be 15 times faster than today's quickest chips Intel has assigned the pet name "Keifer" to the many-core processor project in general and "Gulftown" specifically to its 32-core processor that will be manufactured using a 32nm process, and it will include eight processing nodes, each with four cores. The jaw-dropper is that each one of these cores will be running at a paltry 2GHz, but since there are 32 of them, they'll leave today's processors in the dust. That is, unless Intel thinks of something else between now and then, which wouldn't be all that unusual. – Charlie White

The new Intel Core i7 Processor

About this time last year Intel launched what was the fastest 45nm quad core CPU on the planet, the Intel Core 2 Quad QX9770. Well, guess what, Intel has done it again with the latest architectural achievement, the Core I7 Extreme 965. What the two have is common is that they both are based on Penryn cores, they both are 45 nanometer chips and they both run at a clock speed of 3.2GHz. After these things what you have is a whole new animal. Gone from this chip is the twelve megabytes of L2 cache, this is replaced by a third level of cache at 8MB. Slow and inefficient it is not. With the addition of an integrated memory controller, the memory bandwidth is expected to be huge by comparison to today’s top of the line processors, somewhere close to two to three times the peak bandwidth. SMT (Simultaneous Multi Threading) has made a return on the Core I7 generation. This will enable the processor to run a total of eight threads at one time. Some other new features are Dynamic Energy Management, new SSE4 instructions, three level cache with a shared 8MB L3 cache and improved branch prediction. Many are interested in the new efficiencies and features, while many think this generation will be the Holy Grail of processors, Let’s find out just how it performs. That’s the question that is on everyone’s mind.

Classmate PC system.

Expect to see several new netbook models come out at the upcoming CES 2009 conference in Las Vegas (which we’ll be at to cover of course). Several companies are expected to introduce touch-enabled netbook systems – one of which is Intel Corporation with a tablet-styled Classmate PC system. The folks at LaptopMag managed to get some one on one time with the system (lucky them!) and yes – there are a lot of awesome pictures also. Here are some tidbits from the article:
The system is being manufactured by CTL
Top of the system is now a cool sky blue color
Specs include 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 60GB HDD, 8.9 inch screen, and Windows XP
Preloaded with touch-screen enabled software including “Vision Objects Pen Input” which performs handwriting recognition
Touch-screen is responsive to both fingers and a stylus
Built-in accelerometer
This certainly can be a great addition to kids around the world – but more importantly, this shows hardware manufacturers that touch-enabled netbooks can also be made generally available to all consumers.

With the Wolfdale core Intel pours more power into a Core 2 Duo package. The 45nm process allowed Intel to reduce the power needed to 65W. Lower power means lower CPU heat, which translates to lower system heat and longer system life. They also packed more features into the chip. L2 cache has been bumped to 6MB and the Front Side Bus has been pushed to 1333MHz. You can now use both DDR2 and the hot new DDR3 memory for extreme performance. They also boosted memory access and execution speed with the Wide Dynamic Execution and Smart Memory Access. These combine to let the processor compute more instructions with more data per clock cycle. You'd better watch out; your enemies will be shooting back faster now

Intel Core 2 Extreme / Core Duo Process

Intel's Core 2 architecture is based upon a 65 nanometer process. The first Intel CPU to use the 65 nm process was the Core mobile CPU released in the beginning of the year. Based upon the Pentium M architecture, the Core was faster in many respects than equivalent desktop CPUs in performance. There were two types of Core CPUs, Core Single and Core Duo, with the Core Duo being the world's first low-power Dual-Core CPU (25W). The Core 2 has 291 million transistors.
Core 2 is dual core architecture. That means there are two independent CPU cores on the same die. The first Intel dual core CPU was the Pentium D introduced in spring of 2005. Each core on the Core 2 has independent L1 caches. Early dual-core CPUs had independent L2 caches as well. Core 2 has a unified L2 cache of either 2MB or 4MB. That means when data is required on both cores only one set of data need be passed instead of two on two separate L2 caches.
Core 2 supports all current instruction sets, including the x86 instruction set, the Multimedia eXtensions introduced with the Pentium MMX CPU. Streaming SIMD instructions were introduced with the Pentium 3 CPU. The Core 2 architecture supports SSE2, SSE3 and there are 16 new CPU instructions called SSE4. Intel has also included a new feature called Media Boost which increases the number of 128-bit instructions to one per clock cycle, before it was 2 clock cycles for each 128-bit multimedia instruction. Also supported is Intel's Extended Memory 64 Technology, 64-bit instructions that are equivalent to AMD's instruction set.

AMD has used 45-nm manufacturing process for the new Phenom II which means that it manages to produce more CPU per unit area than ever before while the latter will consume

Intel Core 2 Extreme Discontinued in June 2009

It looks like Intel is giving a few of the LGA775 processors the axe. Both of the Core 2 Extreme quad core chips will be retired in June 2009.Intel has already sent out the PDN (Product Discontinuance Notice) for both the QX9770 and QX9650 Extreme Edition chips. As a very large majority of the enthusiast community most likely already has their hands on these chips, they probably aren’t moving too many of them through inventory anymore compared to their new offerings for the Core i7’s. If you still want one you better grab it in the coming months before they go out of stock.

Update: Nvidia Will Drop Atom For Via Nano In Ion2

Personally we just want Intel and nVidia to make love chipsets not war but the impending legal battle between the two has seen an interesting side effect today…
Speaking with Digitimes nVidia president Jen-Hsun Huang has revealed the GPU giant will break ties with Intel when it comes to designing the company’s next generation ION platform (pictured), unsurprisingly christened ION 2.Instead nVidia has confirmed it will be switching allegancies to, no not AMD, but VIA and its hugely promising if low profile Nano CPU. According to Huang ION 2 is already in development and will appear before the end of 2009. Of course the exciting aspect to all this is ION provides decent graphical oomph to netbook/budget desktop chipsets adding support for things like Full HD 1080p playback - a key factor in establishing these units in a media-centric environment.

Foxconn Quantum Force X58 BloodRage

X58 based motherboards are popping up thick and fast. And why not? - Core i7 is Intel’s new cash cow and its performance is beyond anything that Core 2 could ever hope for. Thanks to the on-chip memory controller, Intel has finally abandoned the old FSB interface for this high-end CPU and move to a more data friendly bus between the Northbridge and the CPU. No longer are memory transactions between CPU and DRAM required to go across a limited bus.
